Pontiac, MI (May 28, 2009) - The United Soccer League (USL) announced the Premier Development League (PDL) team of the week and Julian Robles (Los Angeles/University of Michigan; right) gathers the first honors of 2009 for the Michigan Bucks. Robles normally anchors the Bucks back line along with veteran Kevin Taylor, but last week decided to show his offensive prowess as well. In addition to helping shut out Cincinnati (3-0) and Indiana (1-0), Robles also scored two goals in the win over the Kings with a beautiful header from a corner kick and a breakaway goal that sealed the game. The talented 6-1 Michigan senior is always happy to score goals, but fully understands his role with the Bucks this summer.

“Scoring the first goal was important for us because we have been struggling a bit while we get to know each other offensively,” said Robles from his Ann Arbor apartment. “But my most important role is to make sure we are solid defensively game in and game out. We know if we don’t give up goals, we don’t have to score many to win. We have an incredible amount of talent here, so getting the confidence of the coaches to be able to play ninety minutes for the Bucks is a major accomplishment. The fact that they let me go forward to score is a bonus.”

Bucks head coach Dan Fitzgerald likes what he sees on the defensive side of the ball.

“We are starting to get it as a team. We changed systems after the first two games due to the personnel we have on the squad and everyone here knows that we cannot allow goals this season if we want to win games. So far, we do not have the killer offensive instinct you will usually see from a Bucks team- hopefully that will develop. We certainly have the talent to score three goals a game, but until that talent identifies itself, we are all about clean sheets from our goal keepers.”

The Bucks (2-1-1) will try to make it three in a row when they host the Toronto Lynx at Ultimate Soccer Arenas this Sunday night (7:30 PM kickoff). Toronto opens their PDL season this week with a game at Chicago on Saturday before heading for Pontiac, a place where they upset the Bucks 1-0 last season in the Bucks only regular season defeat.
